“Thank God my mom and dad bought me books growing up, I’m so glad I’m not dumb,”a fellow camper exclaimed at dinner. Have you ever participated in a leadership activity sometimes referred to as, “identity walk” or “culture walk?” In it, a facilitator first asks, “please stand if you grew up with books in your house?” I participated in many of these, and I must say that I never stood up. The only “books” I grew up with were books I checked out and the TV y Novelas magazines (Latin American gossip magazine) in our bathroom.
